At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, seawater and fresh water were injected to cool down the reactor cores and in spent fuel pools after the accident in March 2011. Therefore, metallic materials for reactor and fuel pool will be exposed to corrosion environment. At JAEA, research on the integrity of materials for nuclear power plant have been carried out since March 2011. Outline and results of the research regarding to reactor and fuel pool will be present.

Zeolite minerals are used for adsorption of radioactive cesium from water. After the water treatment, intense ionizing radiations would induce water radiolysis in the zeolite pores to produce hydrogen (H) and hydrogen peroxide (HO). Hence the radiation effects on zeolite-water mixtures were studied. Production of H from a mixture of natural mordenite and seawater was measured. The measurement suggests that H was produced due to the irradiation of mordenite additionally to H from the direct water radiolysis. Then, the effect of oxygen (O) on H production from a mixture of X-type zeolite and water was investigated. Decrease in H production was observed in the presence of O. The decrease indicates an effect of O to inhibit the additional H from the zeolite. Moreover, radiation-induced reactions of HO in a mixture with Y-type zeolite were studied. HO was effectively decomposed by irradiation. The decomposition can be explained by a radiation-induced reaction of HO adsorbed on the zeolite. The results show that the radiation-induced reactions of molecules adsorbed on zeolites have a key role in the radiation effects on the zeolite-water mixtures.
